It is a well known, almost universally acknowledged fact that, where God is concerned, "Nothing is to difficult for Thee." Even as children we sang, "My God is so big, so strong and so mighty. . . " One of the things that I am learning, over and over and over, is that He is a God of details. He is the all powerful God who raises the dead and put the universe in its place. But He is also the God that will let me find a Polly Pocket doll for my toddler because I prayed with her that we would find it. Sometimes he will maintain these seemingly insignificant, unimportant details for months at a time. It is a little embarrassing that I have to, sooooo often, be reminded of just how far His detail control goes.
About two months ago, I was shopping with our daughters and we bought three pairs of Minnie Mouse socks for our youngest, two purple (her favourite color) and one pink (because it was a really good price and she needed socks desperately). After purchasing the socks in one store, we walked through the "mall" to the grocery store at the other end and finished our shopping. She insisted on carrying her "special socks" by herself. Upon entering the vehicle and doing the "mental check" for items lest they be forgotten, I asked my daughter to give me the socks. She gave me a horrified look and said, "I lost them!" I told her it would be ok and I would go in and retrieve them. I ran back in the store and looked (really well) in every place we had been, to no avail. I could not find them anywhere. I went to customer service and checked. No socks. Back in the vehicle I gave the little lecture on why this is why we don't put things down, and being responsible . . . Now it should have been my first thought, before going to look, to pray with her and ask our omniscient God to show us where they were. Nope, not this self-sufficient mom, I waited to do that until after I had searched once. After praying (at the suggestion of the four year old, mind you) I went back in and looked again. Still no socks. I checked the lost and found a few more times in the subsequent weeks, but did not find the socks. I should mention that this was a very traumatic incident for our daughter because there were no more of these socks to be had. They were on clearance when we bought them. She continued to refer to her "lost minnie socks." I had all but forgotten them unless she mentioned them.
Today my great God reminded me, yet again, that He is the creator and perfecter of details. I was back at the same grocery store. I was walking down and aisle toward the cashier when I looked to the side and noticed the bottom of a little hanging display. There were some Minnie Mouse socks. I looked at them to see if there was a price. Then it clicked. There were two purple pairs and one pink. I took them to customer service and asked the man to scan them and see if they were in the computers or if they were the ones for which I had lost and been checking his lost and found. He scanned and searched the computers, then smiled and said, "I just love happy endings," while handing men a bag with the the socks. I paid for my other items and practically floated out to the car, "Walking and leaping and praising God," as the song says. In the car I told the girls this story. They were as surprised as I. We all thanked God. What a great day.
